It’s been a long time between posts. The challenge of embarking on a studio collective has taken a lot of energy but worth it in so many ways and as it continues to flourish things become easier. Throughout all the work at Whau I have still been exploring my fascination with enamel and the celebration of beauty found in everyday places. The value seen in flaky urban surfaces along with the imperfect and impermanent images that I see daily. The work shown here is simple in form allowing the surface to produce a dialogue.
A studio collective of like minded individuals, that is the reason for my long silence.
However, we are up and running in the heart of Auckland. Shared studio space and innovative creative classes starting soon. I am thrilled to be part of this great initiative.

One year on and I have to say “where did that year go?” It has been a whirlwind of a year.
Family has found me again and at times I think they wish I was back at Tech stressing over final show rather than checking on homework and tidiness of bedrooms.
Personally I have had a great year, the graduate show at Fingers Gallery, having work in Fingers Annual show and experimentation with new ideas along with meeting Mike Holmes again at Talkfest.
But still I feel I haven’t done enough. I think that will always be me though. The jewellery scene in Auckland is supportive and involved. and I feel great to be a small part of it. This year I have spoken to some of my heroes and found out they are approachable and full of encouragement. So what next? Handshake 2 is asking for participants and after some personal questions I am going to apply, so it will be an anxious time to sort my stuff out and await a response. But as I found out regarding GraduateMetal13, if you don’t have a go you will never know

All surfaces are manipulated by hand and then covered with liquid enamel.
The surface draws the eye to the beauty found in impermanence and deterioration over time the underlying surface will reveal itself to the wearer,
This indeterminate nature of finish intrigues me.
Not quite a month since the show but still a little too long after it to write anything apart from my own musings on the experience.
The range of work exhibited was vast. From the huge piece in this image to small intricately pierced pieces of metal.
Why? Well good old self-doubt came into play but the best thing was it was real. I was there looking at it and all because I had bothered to send in an image.
So if absolutely nothing else the experience has taught me to ‘give it a go’ because you never know what somebody else sees in your work. Exceedingly hard at times, at other times genuinely surprising and encouraging.

Off to Brisbane I go.
This piece is part of the Graduate Metal 13 Exhibition
which is in conjunction with the 15th JMGA (Jewellers and Metalsmiths Group of Australia)
This was the piece chosen for the Masterworks Neckwear 10 Exhibition.
This could well be the most time consuming and difficult thing I have started.
The idea of making a bangle by using rivets to attach all the pieces seemed such a great concept at 3am ! The principle has come from observations of bridges and planes and the method used to construct them.
The bizarre part is it is the intention that all this work will be covered in enamel. The word ‘why’ keeps jumping into my head as I struggle with another rivet.
